IDRN 1300 - Community Based Disaster Response

Length: 2 Days

Type: Direct Instruction

Prerequisites: IDRN 1100

Description: IDRN 1300 - Community Based Disaster Response - is intended to foster robust and resilient communities in the face of a disaster. The IDRN 1300 is the follow up course to IDRN 1100.  This course is designed to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to a disaster within their community.

Through the training, trainees are provided with the skills and information necessary to be self-sustainable during a disaster. Participants will gain a basic understanding of coordinating multiple teams in a disaster zone, while simultaneously collaborating with larger NGOs and other international entities. Trainees will obtain skills in conducting timely and accurate needs and damage assessments, as well as basic disaster response skills such as: fire suppression, urban search and rescue, surface water rescue, and medical triage. In addition, techniques for acquiring bulk relief supplies as well as establishing a distribution network will be covered.

At the end of the module, the trainee will be able establish a preconfigured base of operations, called a Local Coordination Center (LCC).  An established LCC in a community is used during a disaster as a base for response teams.  This is extremely necessary in order to aid a community during a disaster.

All of the acquired skills will be tested and evaluated during a day long table-top  S.P.E.A.R Exercise. The S.P.E.A.R (Seismic Post-Event Assessment & Response) Exercise will place participants in a disaster scenario where they will have to coordinate, manage, and respond as a team in a "disaster zone."  This exercise allows trainees to put into practice what they have learned throughout the course.
